Estate Planning is a necessity for everyone. It doesn't matter if you are rich, poor, married, single, a property owner, a renter, a woman, a man, young, old etc. Estate Planning deals with whatever you leave behind once you pass away. It also deals with how you would want someone to take care of you or handle your financial affairs should you be not able to make decisions (i.e. coma).
A will is simply a way of letting the world know how you want the simplest items such as the shirt off your back, to more complicated assets such as certain bank accounts to be divided once you have passed. This takes away the headache for your loved ones and survivors to "guess" what you would have wanted. Of importance is to note that a will does not avoid probate.
Many people imagine that estate planning is only for the old. However, Estate Planning is so much more than deciding how to divide all the assets you have obtained throughout your life. Estate planning involves choosing who you would like to be the guardians of your minor children, naming your own guardian should the time arise, naming the person that will make your healthcare choices if your cannot make them, determining if you want to be buried or cremated, choosing whether you will opt in for life support or not, and other decisions that affect you will you are alive and after you have passed.
We understand that sometimes thinking about these issues, end of life decisions, can be a bit sad but it is important for you and your family that you plan appropriately.
